RESUMO:

The clay-polymer nanocomposites show improvements in mechanical and rheological properties, reducing water absorption. Due to the biocompatibility characteristic of some polymers, it is possible to use them as biomaterial thus presenting the ability to be employed in the human body generating good results without causing unwanted effects. They are then progressively used in biomedical applications such as in drug delivery, vaccination, wound dressing and tissue engineering systems. Palygorskite has been widely applied in drug delivery systems because it has a fibrous structure and interesting physicochemical properties. Antibiotics are drugs used to treat infectious diseases caused by bacteria, neomycin is a drug that acts to inhibit the protein synthesis of gram-negative and some gram-positive bacteria. Tape casting is an effective method for the production of sheet, planar and high specific area ceramic tapes, which consists of forming a suspension and casting it by means of a leveling blade on a generally movable surface. After drying, a flexible and resistant sheet is produced. In this work, palygorskite tapes were made with the incorporation of neomycin in order to study the drug controlled release. The ceramic suspensions were characterized by rheological test and then the ceramic tapes were characterized by thermal analysis (TGA and DTA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), infrared absorption spectroscopy (FTIR), electron microscopy (FEG-SEM), antimicrobial activity and minimum bactericidal concentration tests. The results showed that the suspensions presented pseudoplastic behavior, suitable for the process via tape casting. The TGA curves of the tapes showed similar profiles, in which the total mass loss process occurred in three stages, in the temperature range of 30 °C to 500 °C. These steps may be related to water dehydration and decomposition of the organic constituents used in the preparation of the suspensions. The XRD patterns of the ceramic tapes revealed the formation of the paligorskite - H9AlMgO15Si4 phases, of orthorhombic structure, according to standard form (JCPDS 98-007-7211) and quartz - SiO2, hexagonal structure according to the standard form (JCPDS 98 - 003-5110). Finally, the method employed and the processing conditions favored the production of ceramic tapes, based on palygorskite. In addition, it was possible through the antimicrobial tests to observe the efficiency of the materials when applied in the controlled release of drugs.
