RESUMO:
Brazil pointed out in the last decade with a prominent position on the world stage of production and consumption of ceramic tiles, ranking the second place, however, the production of the most advanced kind of ceramic tiles, porcelain stoneware, still only has a margin between 8% to 10% of the produced coatings, which is to be increased. Despite the low production of porcelain, Brazil has pioneered a standard technique specified for porcelain stoneware, NBR 15463 of 2007. The Rio Grande do Norte stands out for having great deposits of pegmatite, kaolinite clay and kaolin, the main materials for the production of porcelain tiles, it also stands out by research carried out in order to obtain this typology by the use of mining and industrial waste, however, the surveys were restricted to assessments of technological and mechanical properties. The behavior in brightness gain of the products obtained and the influence of physical and microstructural parameters in the honing process are still unknown. In the case of porcelain tiles, the brightness is the aesthetic effect is the most appreciated by consumers, and the most important quality criterion for polished products. Given the above, this study aims to evaluate the influence of microstructure in the process of honing porcelain stoneware formulated with mineral industrial waste, such as kaolin processing waste, waste from processing of sheelita, stone powder and grog red ceramic. The aim is to evaluate whether the inclusion of such waste in porcelain formulations changes the physical and microstructural properties and their influence during the honing process at maximum brightness levels and how tall the impact will be on the final product. Previously, all the raw and waste materials used in this work were characterized by spectroscopic techniques X-ray fluorescence, X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis, differential thermo-gravimetric analysis and particle size. After conception of the formulations, the production and heat treatment of the samples, tests were run to evaluate the technological, physical and microstructural properties of the formulations to classify the final products in porcelain stoneware. The results so far line out that the mineral industrial wastes presentes potential to be used as alternative substitutes for the traditional main raw materials, working in plasticizers, fluxes and structural functions within the tri-axial compositions of this value added product.
