SUMMARY:

Long COVID is characterized as the persistence of symptoms after 4 weeks from the onset of COVID-19 infection. It is still unclear which physical symptoms, and whether their combination, are associated with movement behavior components (sedentary time and physical activity) and physical function (cardiorespiratory capacity, muscle strength, and agility/dynamic balance). This study aims to investigate the association between physical symptoms with objectively measured movement behaviors using accelerometry and physical function in adults with long COVID. A total of 94 adults with long COVID (49.1 ± 13.2 years; female: 58.9%; 29.7 ± 6.3; long COVID duration: 12.9 ± 8.1 months) were included in this multicenter cross-sectional study (Natal, Fortaleza, and Florianópolis). Results: There was an inverse association of fatigue (β = -4807; 95% CI = -7641; -1972), post-exertional malaise (β = -2,852; 95% CI = -4582; -1122), and the number of symptoms (2 symptoms: β = -3854; 95% CI = -6876; -833. 3 symptoms: β = -4927; 95% CI = -7907; -1946. 4 symptoms: β = -5135; 95% CI = -8078; -2193) with the number of steps per day. The presence of fatigue was associated with better physical function (p<0.05). Conclusion: Greater fatigue, dyspnea, and the number of physical symptoms in long COVID were negatively associated with the number of steps per day. However, the presence of fatigue, but not other symptoms, was associated with better physical function. Our preliminary findings demonstrate the complex interaction between physical symptoms of long COVID with movement behaviors and physical function in COVID-19 survivors.
