SUMMARY:

Introduction: The Integrative Neuromuscular Training (INT) has been indicated as an innovative approach to improve health-related components, injury prevention, physical conditioning and cognition in children and adolescents. Objective: Analyzing the effect of INT on the inhibitory control of under-15 category youths in a soccer school. Methods: 16 adolescents were divided into two groups: control group – CG (n = 8; age: 14.02 ± 0.84 years; height: 1.62 ± 0.76 m; body mass: 53.74 ± 11.87 kg); and intervention group – GINT (n = 8; age: 13.89 ± 0.88 years; height: 1.64 ± 0.42 m; body mass: 54.71 ± 11.91 kg). In addition to soccer training, the adolescents of INTG participated in the interventions with the INT over 12 weeks with 15-minute training sessions, twice a week. The somatic maturation was evaluated, according to Mirwald et al. (2002). To measure the effect of INT on cognitive and motor performance, the Computerized Stroop Test (CST) and the Reactive Agility Test (RAT) were applied at three moments: pre-intervention, 06 weeks and post-intervention. To observe the effect of the INT between the groups and over time, the ANOVA of repeated measures and the post-hoc Bonferroni test were used to identify possible differences. The differences in the percentages (Δ%) of change between the groups were verified using the Mann-Whitney U test. Spearman's correlation coefficient was used to correlate maturation levels and the results obtained in the tests. Results: For the congruent steps of the CST, no effect of time (F = 0.246; p = 0.707) or interaction between the groups (F = 0.942; p = 0.376) was observed. For the incongruous stage, a time effect was observed for the GINT at all analyzed moments: pre-intervention for 06 weeks (p = 0.012); 06 weeks for post-intervention (p=0.001); and pre - to post - intervention (p = 0.001). In the errors made in the incongruous step, there was no time effect (F = 1.552; p = 0.232) and no interaction effect between the groups (F = 0.036; p = 0.953). When the Inverted Efficiency Score (IES) was evaluated, there was an effect of time on the GINT for the moments from 06 weeks to post-intervention (p = 0.047) and from pre- to post-intervention (p = 0.002). In the RAT, no interaction was observed between the groups in any of the phases of the test. When considering the perception (F = 2.559; p = 0.112) and response (F = 0.665; p = 0.522) phases, no time effect was observed. As for the agility variable, a time effect was observed on the GINT from the pre- to post-intervention moment (p = 0.004). There is an effect of time for percentage change (Δ%) in GINT from the pre- to post-intervention moment in the variables: response time in the incongruous stage of the CST (p = 0.004); IES of the incongruous stage of the CST (p = 0.030); and performance in RAT agility (p = 0.034). There was also a significant difference (Z = 0.214; p = 0.031) between the groups for the percentage variation (Δ%) from the pre- to post-intervention moment in the incongruous stage of the CST. Conclusion: The addition of INT to a systematic soccer training, performed twice a week with young people between 12 and 15 years old, promoted improvements in the performance of the incongruous stage of CST and agility, indicating that INT can contribute to improving cognitive capacity, specifically the inhibitory and motor control of sports adolescents
