SUMMARY:

ntroduction: The evaluation of muscle imbalance has been commonly used as a parameter for the prediction of injuries that guide injury prevention programs. However, this systematization has failed in professional sport and, while there is scientific progress in this perspective, the incidence of injury has been progressively increasing every year. An important point that must be taken into account is that the injuries happen during the game, in a condition of fatigue, while the evaluations are carried out in a condition of non-fatigue.Objective: To analyze the effect of fatigue on the peak maximum strength of extensors and flexors knee and bilateral asymmetry between limbs; In addition, we want to investigate the agreement between the asymmetry assessed by jumping and the isokinetic dynamometer. Methods: 10 American football athletes were recruited for evaluations in the condition of absence of fatigue and fatigue. Fatigue was induced by a repeated sprint training protocol. Sprint performance and countermovement vertical jump were used to verify if there was a reduction in performance after induction of the stressful protocol. The unilateral jump was evaluated using the countermovement jump. Maximum strength of knee extensors and flexors was assessed using the isokinetic dynamometer (60º / s - concentric: concentric). Results: There was no condition effect on the hamstring ratio: quadriceps ( F (1.9) = 0.059, p = 0.813, η2 = 0.007), but the effect of time (F (1.9) = 6.053, p = 0.036, η2 = 0.402) and interaction (F (1.9 ) = 8,640, p = 0.017, η2 = 0.490) .The knee extensors showed a condition effect (F (1.9) = 6,110, p = 0.035, η2 = 0.404) and time (F (1.9) = 25.321 , p = 0.001, η2 = 0.738), but not interaction (F (1.9) = 1.947, p = 0.196, η2 = 0.178). The knee flexors did not show the effect of time (F (1.9) = 1.72, p = 0.222, η2 = 0.161), condition (F (1.9) = 0.275, p = 0.613, η2 = 0.030) and interaction ( F (1.9) = 1.571, p = 0.242, η2 = 0.149). There was no statistical difference in the force asymmetry of extensors (t (9) = 1.46; p = 0.178; ∆ = 4.97; 95% CI = - 2.73 - 12.67; r = 0.424; p = 0.222) and flexors (t (7) = -1.186; p = 0.266; ∆ = -8.12; 95% CI = -23.61 - 7.37; r = 0.585; p = 0.076). The unilateral jump performance had a condition effect (F (1.9) = 11.439, p = 0.008, η2 = 0.560), but no time effect (F (1.9) = 2.873, p = 0.124, η2 = 0.242 ) and interaction (F (1,9) = 0.004, p = 0.951, η2 = 0.0004). There was no statistical difference between the non-fatigue condition and fatigue in the asymmetry between members (t (7) = -0.880; p = 0.402; ∆ = -2.92; 95% CI = -10.43 - 4.58; r = 0.109; p = 0.765 The CMJ asymmetry and the knee extensor asymmetry are not statistically different (t (9) = -0.135; p = 0.895; ∆ = 0.44; 95% CI = -6.93 - 7.82; r = 0.485; p = 0.155 ) in the absence of fatigue and with fatigue (t (9) = -1.295; p = 0.228; ∆ = -6.33; 95% CI = -17.39 - 4.73; r = -0.077; p = 0.832). However, the data were not reproducible in the absence of fatigue (F (7) = 1,986; ICC = 0.497; 95% CI = -1.027 - 0.875; p = 0.161) and fatigued (F (7) = 0.860; ICC = - 0.163; 95% CI = -3.683 - 0.711; p = 0.587). Conclusion: Fatigue can affect the muscle balance of football players and the ways of assessing asymmetry are not in agreement.
