Obesity is a serious public health problem in the world that reduces life expectancy, since it increases the risk of developing chronic noncommunicable diseases such as hypertension, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases (Bastien et al, 2014 ). The increase in health risks associated with obesity is related not only to the total amount of fat, but also how it is distributed, especially in the abdominal region (Stolarczyk et al, 2000). There are several methods of assessing body composition. The evaluation methods performed in laboratories with sophisticated equipment are good options, however they are expensive and difficult to access, mainly for population studies. An index was recently proposed with the objective of measuring body adiposity with the argument that it would be a good substitute for BMI, since it did not need the body mass index, called body fat index (IAC), calculated from the measure hip circumference and height (Bergman et al, 2011). Our study aimed to analyze if IAC is a valid predictor of body fat in Brazilian adults. A total of 425 individuals aged 20-59 years were evaluated, 204 males and 221 females, who underwent an anthropometric evaluation. The standard technique was dual energy radiological Abortometry (DEXA). The paired t-test, the linear regression and the Bland-Altman plot were performed to test the validity of the proposed model. Descriptive statistics were used with individualized values for body composition.
