RESUMO:

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of a single session of isometric elbow flexion on ambulatory blood pressure (BP) in hypertensive individuals.

METHODS: Seven inactive hypertensive subjects (♂ = 2, ♀ = 5; 46.7± 5.6 years; 28.3 ± 2.9 kg/m²; resting BP 119 ± 13 / 74 ± 8 mmHg) participated in this randomized controlled trial with a crossover design. The subjects performed two experimental sessions in a randomized order with one-week interval: i) isometric elbow flexion session (sets: 4 x 1 min; intervals: 2 min; intensity: 30% of one-repetition maximum at 90°) and ii) control session (no exercise). Both sessions were performed in the morning with duration of 12 min. The ambulatory BP was assessed during 20 h (awake: 12 h; asleep: 8 h) following both the isometric elbow flexion session and the control session using an ambulatory BP monitoring (ABPM) device. The results are shown in mean values and 95% confidence interval. Systolic, diastolic and mean BP values during 20 h, awake and asleep periods were compared between the isometric elbow flexion session and control session using a paired t-test. Statistical significance was set at 5%.

RESULTS: There were no differences in systolic, diastolic and mean BP values in the 20 h, awake, and asleep periods between the isometric elbow flexion session and control session (p>0.05).

CONCLUSION:  Our preliminary findings do not support the use of isometric elbow flexion to reduce ambulatory BP acutely in hypertensive individuals.
