RESUMO:

The executive functions manage complex cognitive processes, which are essential for learning and academic performance. Aerobic exercise has shown to be capable of influencing the performance of the inhibitory control (i.e., subcomponent of the executive functions), but its outcome during puberty is controversial and incipient. Therefore, our main objective is to verify the interactive effects of acute aerobic exercise and physical fitness over the performance of executive functions in adolescents. In order to do so, a controlled cross-over trial will be performed with 40 pubescent individuals, of both sexes, aged between 13 and 14 years. The participants will be divided in two groups through the median of the maximum oxygen uptake (VO2max), namely: low physical fitness (< median of VO2max; n = 20) and high physical fitness (≥ median of VO2max; n = 20). Both groups will be submitted to one experimental session and one control session, both 30 minutes long, with an interval of 7 days in between each session, in a randomized order: i) moderate-to-vigorous aerobic exercise session, consisting of 5 minutes of warm-up, 20 minutes of small-sized futsal, and 5 minutes of cool down; and ii) control session, watching age-appropriate cartoons. After the experimental and control sessions, the resting autonomic modulation will be measured throughout 15 minutes by heart rate variability. Afterwards, a battery of cognitive tests will be performed, with a total duration of 60 minutes through the PEBL program: Go/NoGo paradigm, Berg’s Card Sorting test, Trail-marking task, Tower of London, Sternberg’s memory scanning test and the Attentional network test. Reaction time and rate of errors will be registered in each cognitive test. A mixed-factor analysis of variance (ANOVA) will be performed to verify the fitness (low vs. high) x condition (control vs. exercise) x trial (Go vs. NoGo) x congruence (congruent vs. incongruent) over the reaction time and rate of errors. The coefficient of correlation and simple linear regression will be performed to verify the relation between the cognitive and autonomic outcomes.
