SUMMARY:

Acanthaceae comprises 240 genera and over 4,000 species, widely distributed in tropical and subtropical regions. In Brazil, 39 genera and 446 species distributed in all phytogeographic domains occur, with the highest number of species (244) recorded for the Atlantic Forest, followed by Amazonia (147), Cerrado (145), Caatinga (49), Pampa (23), and Pantanal (22). Acanthaceae are important plants in tropical and subtropical forests, where it occupy a wide variety of habitats and are permanent sources of floral resources for the local fauna. Taxonomic studies including Acanthaceae from Brazilian Northeast are limited, considering the territorial extension and the diverse ecosystems in that region. The objectives of this thesis are to carry out a taxonomic survey of the Acanthaceae of the Northern Northeast and to develop an environmental education program, focusing on representatives of the Acanthaceae from the Caatinga, with the main target audience being public school students from the municipality of Cuité, in the State of Paraíba. As partial results of the thesis, the taxonomic survey of Acanthaceae from Rio Grande do Norte state is presented, with descriptions, comments on geographic distribution, maps, phenology, and new occurrences for genera and species. Additionally, is proposed a new name and lectotype for Beloperone fragilis, species described by Nees (1847), and a second lectotypification step for Justicia piauhiensis (Nees) V.A.W. Graham, endemic species from Piauí; the first record of Justicia sessilis Jacq. for Brazil is described; and the floristic survey of Acanthaceae in the Agreste region of Paraíba is presented. These results expand the knowledge of the diversity of Acanthaceae in Northeastern Brazil, contributing to the increase of collections and deepening the taxonomy and geographic distribution of the family in the semiarid region.
