SUMMARY:

Kryptolebias is a genus of non-annual fish of the family Rivulidae, presenting several microhabitats, ranging from small streams and coastal freshwater marshes to mangroves. Freshwater species that are endemic to South America have a restricted geographic distribution, including critically endangered species. On the other hand, estuarine representatives have a wide geographic distribution, with the species of the K. marmoratus complex (K. marmoratus and K. hermaphroditus) occurring from Florida, in the United States, to São Paulo in Brazil and K. ocellatus occurring from Rio from January to Santa Catarina. Thus, there is an overlapping of the distribution between K. hermaphroditus and K. ocellatus in Rio de Janeiro. For mangrove species, there is historical taxonomic confusion, with inconsistent molecular and morphological data. In Brazil, initially the species of the genus Kryptolebias were only known from the southeast region, having purely descriptive works. However, records in the north and northeast, which included the first male in a Brazilian locality, in addition to the possible occurrence of K. marmoratus in the northeast, raised questions about the real distribution of the genus in the western Atlantic mangroves. Furthermore, a recent phylogeographical study indicated three distinct lineages for the K. marmoratus complex, the first being identified as K. marmoratus occurring in the mangroves of Florida and the Bahamas, an undefined lineage for the Caribbean and Greater Antilles and a last for the regions northeast and southeast Brazil, attributed to K. hermaphroditus. Even with robust genetic and ecological studies with K. marmoratus, little is known about the genetic structure and evolutionary history of mangrove rivulus off the coast of Brazil. Therefore, a project with national and international partnerships was necessary, which I was part of, in order to investigate the distribution and natural history of the species of the genus Kryptolebias. Based on this, the objectives of this work are to indicate the current distribution for Kryptolebias species from mangroves on the Brazilian coast, with a phylogeographic approach, indicating the genetic structure along the distribution. In addition to testing, based on ecological niche models, whether the increase in temperature promoted the expansion of the distribution of K. hermaphroditus. The results indicate 14 new records covering 5,434 km of the Brazilian coast, expanding the limits of distribution of the Central and Sout clade (K. hermaphroditus). The northern (Central clade) and northeast (K. hermaphroditus) localities showed the highest levels of genetic diversity, with the northeast population demonstrating a probable population expansion. In contrast, the southeastern population of K. hermaphroditus shares a single haplotype, an indication of recent colonization. The species distribution models indicated for K. hermaphroditus two centroids in the eastern northeast and southern southeast of better suitability for the present. While K. ocellatus showed a more homogeneous suitability, although the southernmost region of its distribution has a higher suitability value. Paleoclimatic scenarios do not corroborate the hypothesis of expansion of K. hermaphroditus, indicating a greater area of habitat suitability for the past. On the other hand, K. ocellatus appears to have a loss of suitability at present, in relation to paleoclimatic scenarios.
