SUMMARY:

Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi (AMF) form an obligate association with most plant roots. This symbiosis is found in soils of several terrestrial ecosystems, however, studies have shown their presence colonizing leaves in decaying litter. Even so, there are few studies with AMF in this condition. Thus, this work aimed to record the occurrence and investigate which factors influence the colonization of AMF in the leaves of the litter in three areas of the Atlantic Forest, together with a new methodological approach to study AMF in the litter. For this, leaf collections were made in litter bags in the areas RPPN Mata Estrela, FLONA of Nísia Floresta and Fazenda Sapé, in RN. With the new approach 202 glomerospores were recovered in the litter with Glomus being the most abundant genus. The leaves of Ziziphus joazeiro from Fazenda Sapé and Paubrasilia echinata from Mata Estrela showed the highest percentages of AMF colonization, while the leaves of Hymanaea coubaril from Mata Estrela and Flona together with Mimosa caesalpiniifolia showed the lowest percentages. Our data show that the quality of the litter influences AMF colonization as well as its abundance. In addition, the decomposition time and depth of the litter also affect the percentages of AMF colonization of the litter. Our data reveal that the use of a new methodological approach is useful for recovering AMF from litter, and this is the first study for Glomeromycota using this new approach. We also show which taxa of AMF can be found in this condition. In addition, we found that some leaf characteristics, which generally influence the decomposer community, also have an influence on the AMF community.
