SUMMARY:

Trogolaphysa Mills (Paronellidae) is widely distributed in tropical regions, with 65 species described worldwide. Neotropical species of Trogolaphysa are better understood than Afrotropical species, however there are large gaps in knowledge for several species in the two regions, which are mainly recognized by color patterns, number of eyes, empodial complex and the furcula morphologies. Many species of Trogolaphysa are troglophiles, and some have evident troglomorphisms such as reduction or absence of eyes, body lacking pigments and elongated antennae. The caves provide a important role for biological processes due to the unique environmental stability, but they also have an important economic role in Brazilian mining, with limestone extraction being the main economic activity in municipalities that have carbonate rock caves in Rio Grande do Norte (RN). Previous surveys have shown that Trogolaphysa is the dominant Collembola genus in RN caves. This genus have species with questionable status and its taxonomic study may assist in conservation policies. For this reason, this work presents a detailed taxonomic review based on Trogolaphysa bibliography, with a revised diagnosis and a summary of the general morphology of the genus, detailed diagnoses for all species, comparative tables, key for all taxa of the genus, the inventory of species of the genus present in RN caves and two descriptions of Trogolaphysa’s new species. The specimens representing new species were collected with entomological aspirators and brushes, outside and inside from 10 limestone caves inserted in the Caatingaa biome. The suggestion of species inquirendae in assessing the status of species considered uninformative descriptions, doubtful taxonomic characteristics and/or uninformative or inaccurate location. Fourteen species inquirendae were identified and 51 valid Trogolaphysa’s diagnoses were considered. A synthesis of the general morphology of the genus was also presented, summaring the variations in ketotaxis and its main structures. The description of two new species of Trogolaphysa widely distributed in the caves of the RN together with the revision of the genus provide more accurate data in the diagnosis of species, increase the knowledge about the world fauna of Trogolaphysa which can help policies of conservation of caves in the RN.
