SUMMARY:

Springtails are microhexapods associate to different habitats, especially to the humid edaphic environment. There are currently about 9,200 nominal species of springtails, most of which are found in temperate regions, but the deficit in coverage of taxonomic studies in tropical regions is apparent. The Entomobryomorpha is the most diverse order of Collembola, holding almost 4000 described species. This order houses the largest superfamily of the whole class, Entomobryoidea, which has a wide distribution and consists of three families: Orchesellidae, Entomobryidae and Paronellidae. The Cerrado is the second largest biome in Brazil, and although it is one of the world's biodiversity hotspots, it is undersampled for the Collembola fauna. Thus, this work aims to carry out the first taxonomic study of the Entomobryoidea fauna of Chapada dos Guimarães, Mato Grosso, Brazil. The collection was carried out at twelve points using pitfall traps for two days. The biological material was stored in 70% alcohol and was screened and assembled for identification and morphological study. Specimens representing new species were drawn and described following the literature. Four species of Entomobryoidea were identified in the study, all new to science: Trogolaphysa sp. nov., Entomobrya sp. nov., Salina sp. nov and Seira sp. nov. The four taxa are similar to other Neotropical species of their respective genera, but they have distinctive morphology especially related to dorsal and ventral tube chaetotaxy and morphology of the empodial complex. The data presented here represents a 50% increase in the number of species previously recognized for the Cerrado, and suggest that the domain must shelter a rich unknown fauna of Collembola.
