SUMMARY:

Health Literacy (HL) is a relevant subject in the context of nursing, as it is recognized as a
fundamental strategy for managing health conditions. It is noteworthy that individuals with
impaired LS tend to get sick more frequently and face more frequent hospitalizations
compared to those with adequate LS. Lack of HL skills is associated with lower adherence to
treatment, increased hospitalizations and increased risk of mortality, especially in patients
with Chronic Noncommunicable Diseases (NCDs). In this way, we objectively validate the
nursing diagnosis Impaired health literacy in patients with chronic conditions. This will be a
study of diagnostic accuracy, with a cross-sectional design and a quantitative approach. The
research will be developed at the Health Care Division (DASA), a primary health care service
located at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN) in Natal, Rio Grande do
Norte. DASA is a service center dedicated to comprehensive care with an emphasis on
disease prevention and promoting the health of the institution's employees. The study
population will be made up of people with NCDs treated at DASA. Data will be collected
directly from patients through interviews and the application of a data collection instrument
developed for this purpose. This instrument will address sociodemographic, clinical,
behavioral information and clinical indicators. The data will be organized in a database
created in Microsoft Office Excel and statistical analysis will be carried out using Software R.
The study will be presented for analysis by the UFRN Research Ethics Committee, and will
only be started after a favorable opinion. The study is expected to contribute to more effective
clinical practices, but also promote patient autonomy, allow for a personalized approach to
health education and improve independent management of their health conditions.
