SUMMARY:

The migration of nurses is an important phenomenon with varied implications, both for the
places of origin and destination. Individual, social and professional factors influence the
decision to migrate these workers and the experiences they have directly reflect on the
construction of their personal and professional identities. As an objective, the study analyzed
the decision of nurses who are employed in a public teaching hospital institution to migrate to
another institution in the regions of Brazil. This is an analytical study, with a qualitative
approach, mediated by Thematic Oral History. Nurses working in four university hospitals
managed by the Empresa Brasileira de Serviços Hospitalares who migrated from these units as
well as the other way around were invited to participate in the study. Semi-structured
interviews were carried out and their analysis was carried out through the categories resulting
from the dialogue between the authors studied in the theoretical framework, on the topic. The
research was approved by the UFRN Ethics and Research Committee with Opinion number
6.278.154 and CAAE 70566623.5.0000.5537. 13 interviews were carried out, respecting their
availability and preference regarding format. Therefore, there were 11 (85%) face-to-face
interviews and 2 (15%) through the Google Meet platform. There was a predominance of
female employees 10 (77%), with an average age of 39 years, 3 were single (23%), 7 were
married (54%) and 6 (46%) reported having children. Regarding academic degrees, all reported
having at least two Lato Sensu postgraduate degrees, 13 (100%) and only 2 (15%) reported
having a Stricto Sensu postgraduate degree at master's level. As for the motivation that
influenced the nurses to migrate, the family context was predominant, considering that
returning to their roots, beliefs, customs, culture and above all being present with their family
and friends was a positive point in their lives in this process. Regarding the negative points
experienced by them, such as: feeling of not belonging to the hospitals of final destination,
dissatisfaction regarding the capacity sector incompatible with their identifications, specialties
or professional ambitions, were amortized with the end of the trips that many constantly
made to stay close to their your loved ones. The research found that the majority of nurses
interviewed reported the migration process as positive for both their personal and
professional lives. The impact of this process on the lives of these workers was evident and,
therefore, a gap in measures aimed at the movement and reception of these workers by the
company to mitigate the negative points and make this migration less stressful.
