SUMMARY:

Coronary Transluminal Angioplasty (CTA) is a highly complex, non-surgical treatment aimed at the clearance of coronary arteries. Due to the complexity of this procedure and often the psychophysiological vulnerability of the patient, it may be associated with psychological stressors such as anxiety and stress. These factors appear to play a role in morbidity and cardiovascular mortality risk in patients undergoing angioplasty. Furthermore, anxiety levels reported by patients before and after elective percutaneous CTA also determine clear associations between a history of acute myocardial infarction and attendance in cardiac rehabilitation. Consequently, assessing anxiety and stress levels through validated instruments in the literature is paramount, as anxiety-induced symptoms and complaints can interfere with the patient's quality of life. In this context, the efficacy of music therapy as a non-pharmacological intervention for reducing anxiety and improving feelings and well-being has been extensively tested and discussed in the specialized literature. Music significantly affects human emotions it is inspiring and relaxing and decreases anxiety levels and hemodynamic indices in the preoperative and perioperative phases. With this in mind, the objective is to evaluate the effect of music on anxiety and stress in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary angioplasty. The study will be a randomized, controlled, and double-blinded clinical trial conducted according to the guidelines of the Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials (CONSORT). The study will take place at the hemodynamics department of Onofre Lopes University Hospital, with a probabilistic, random, and simple sample of 52 participants equally divided by gender into the Control Group (GC) and the Intervention Group (GI). The randomization will be ensured using the "Research Randomizer" website. The control group will consist of patients who require Percutaneous Coronary Angioplasty and will receive standard care from the department along with the application of headphones without the transmission of any music approximately 30 minutes before the procedure. On the other hand, the intervention group will receive the music intervention through headphones with the patient's musical preference. Data collection will involve the Informed Consent Form, a form to gather sociodemographic information and the patient's musical preference, and another form that will be used to collect clinical data, such as the presence of comorbidities and vital signs before, during, and after the intervention. Scales will also be applied to assess anxiety and stress levels, namely the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) and the Inventory of Symptoms of Stress for Adults (ISSL). This study will be submitted to the evaluation of the Teaching and Research Management of the University Hospital Onofre Lopes and the Ethics and Research Committee (CEP) of UFRN and the Brazilian Registry of Clinical Trials (ReBEC). This research can strengthen the development of integrative practices that complement the body of knowledge of nursing science, corroborate the appreciation of holistic patient care, enable the use of a low-cost technology to assess its effect on patient anxiety and stress to a percutaneous cardiovascular procedure.
