SOCIAL VULNERABILITY AMONG INSTITUTIONALIZED ELDERLY PEOPLE IN
BRAZIL: AN INTEGRATIVE REVIEW
Keywords: Homes for the Aged. Health of Institutionalized Elderly. Social
vulnerability. Quality of Life.
This study aims to identify the factors that contribute to the social vulnerability of
institutionalized elderly people in Brazil. This is an integrative review study carried out
in the SCIELO, LILACS, BDENF and PUBMED databases, with a period from 2006
to 2022. The indication of this search period refers to the year of implementation of
the National Health Policy for the Elderly. After applicability of the eligibility criteria,
the sample consisted of 23 works. The Brazilian region that most produced articles
object of this review was the Southeast (10), followed by the Northeast (07).
Regarding the distribution by year of publication, the year 2016 had the highest
number of published works. With regard to Levels of Evidence (LE), it appears that
21 studies fit the LE 6 classification. Institutionalized elderly are people who are
highly clinically and functionally vulnerable. The correlation between quality of life and
functional independence of institutionalized elderly showed that the elderly had
negative results in relation to satisfaction with health due to functional independence,
while the perception of quality of life obtained positive results. It is concluded that the
social vulnerability factors are multifaceted, complex, which can be overcome through
continuing education in attention to the policy of the elderly, with the execution of
assistance based on a multidisciplinary team that emphasizes the interdisciplinary
care process, intersectoral, in the prevention, promotion and maintenance of the
health of the institutionalized elderly in the biopsychosocial and spiritual aspects.
