SUMMARY:

Introduction: In the health context, Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) is a post-birth complication identified in newborns from the observation of a set of signs and symptoms resulting from exposure to psychoactive substances during pregnancy or as a result of exposure pharmacological treatment for pain relief and control or sedation when indicated. With regard to nursing care for the newborn, care must be based on interventions that seek to minimize this complication. From the perspective of the execution of the Nursing Process, the NAS, as a NANDA-I Nursing Diagnosis, lacks well-defined diagnostic indicators (defining characteristics and related factors) for its accurate inference and, therefore, directing a care plan. Therefore, with the aim of identifying etiological elements and clinical characteristics of the NAS diagnosis, reducing existing gaps between theory and practice and contributing to the improvement of the quality of nursing care for the neonatal public, a Medium Range Theory (MRT) will be developed based on the Model Roy's Adaptation. Objective: To develop a MRT for the Nursing Diagnosis of Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome. Method: This is a methodological study of theoretical-causal validity for the development of a MRT, proposed by Lopes e Silva's framework, adopting its six stages of construction, namely: Definition of the approach for building the MRT; Definition of theoretical-conceptual models adopted for MRT; Definition of the key concepts of MRT; Construction of a pictorial diagram; Construction of MRT propositions; and Establishing causal relationships and practice-based evidence. For the first stage, two systematic reviews will be carried out: on etiology and risk and on accuracy, both elaborated according to the review method proposed by the JBI manual. The other stages will be developed from the analysis of the main and secondary concepts (antecedent and consequent elements) identified in the reviews in a way that will allow the reflection and rationalization of the basic structure of the MRT under construction. Expected results: This study will produce a broad theoretical framework capable of describing, explaining and predicting the studied phenomenon, with great potential to guide nursing interventions more assertively, meeting the human needs of the population in focus and improving the practice of nursing.
