SUMMARY:

Nursing education, in the pediatric context, has some limitations, especially with regard to students' practical experiences. Administering medication to infants, even though it is a specific nursing skill, is seen as a gap in student training, which commonly has fragile practical opportunities during the training process. This reality is considered disturbing, considering that the main nursing error is related to the practice of medication administration, in which the pediatric public is more sensitive to adverse effects. Simulation is a teaching strategy that can reduce these learning gaps by enabling, through simulators, skills training and imulated experiences. It is in this context that this research is inserted, which aims to build, validate and evaluate the effectiveness of a low-cost simulator for the purpose of administering medication to infants, subcutaneously, intravenously and intramuscularly. Thus, it is a mixed methods research, of the explanatory sequential type, considering that the methodological nature is composed of three types of study: a methodological study, an intervention study, of the quasi-experimental type, and finally, a descriptive study with a qualitative approach. Five stages will be necessary to carry out the research: 1) Planning, construction and testing of the simulator; 2) validation of the simulator among nursing professors; 3) simulation scenario validation; 4) intervention study; and 5) description of the students' perception regarding the experience with the simulator. Quantitative data will be entered into a Statistical Package for the Social Sciences version 20.0 spreadsheet, used for descriptive and inferential analysis. The significance level to be considered will be 0.05. With regard to the qualitative stage, the data will be analyzed using Bardin's Content Analysis method. As it is a research involving human beings, the study will take into account the guarantee of the ethical and legal principles that govern research in human beings. The study will be submitted to the Research Ethics Committee of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte.
