SUMMARY:

Postoperative pain after cardiac surgery is considered common due to sternotomy and placement of drains and, when poorly controlled, it can cause hemodynamic consequences and pulmonary complications. Thus, timely and adequate pain relief leads to a reduction of these complications and the length of hospital stays, in addition to increased patient satisfaction. The use of Integrative and Complementary Practices in Health as non-pharmacological methods to reduce pain is attracting more and more attention, especially aromatherapy, which is characterized by the use of essential oils, whether inhaled, topical or oral, extracted from plants. and has been the subject of studies in the control of pain, anxiety, sleep disturbance and nausea. This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of aromatherapy with inhalation of lavender essential oil in relieving pain during the immediate postoperative period in patients undergoing cardiac surgery. This is a double-blind, randomized controlled clinical trial to be performed according to the Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials (CONSORT). It will be developed in the Intensive Care Unit of the Onofre Lopes University Hospital, with a probabilistic, random and simple sample of 52 participants divided equally into the following groups: Control Group (CG) and Experimental Group (EG), with patients in the immediate postoperative period of cardiac surgery. The randomization of these will be guaranteed through the “Research Randomizer” website. The control group will receive industry standard care and application of drops of double-distilled water on a cotton ball for inhalation. The experimental group will receive the inhalation intervention with lavender essential oil with four drops of the oil on a cotton ball at a distance of 10 cm from the patient's nose, in order to verify its effectiveness in relieving pain. A form will be used to collect patient identification data, information about the surgery, in addition to the Visual Analogue Scale and Visual Numerical Scale that will be applied for pain assessment and the table of vital signs. This study will be submitted for evaluation by the Ethics and Research Committee of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte. In case of receiving a favorable opinion, it will be forwarded to the Teaching and Research Management of the Onofre Lopes University Hospital. Studies on this topic are important so that the use of non-pharmacological methods by nursing, as part of a humanized, holistic care based on scientific evidence, can gain even more place in clinical practice, complementing standard therapies and favoring improvement in the quality of care patient's life.
