SUMMARY:

The pandemic caused by COVID-19 encouraged the rapid increase in new hospital beds, reorganization of care flows and demand for professionals, especially in nursing. However, with the increase in the need for hospital care, the fear of contagion of the disease, the physical and emotional wear of the professional, the scarcity of Personal Protective Equipment and the lack of supplies to carry out care provide interruptions and incidents in nursing care. Therefore, there is an evident need for investigations on safe and quality care for patients with COVID-19. It is believed that identifying the nursing care omitted from the care of patients with COVID-19 can provide a situational diagnosis and, based on this, devise strategies that will reorder the execution of practices in the services, in addition to modifying them to increase the quality of actions and patient safety. In the meantime, this study raises the following guiding questions: what nursing care is omitted during patient care with COVID-19? What are its causes and associated factors? And it aims to describe the care omitted from the perspective of the nursing team in a care unit for patients with COVID-19. This is a cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach carried out at the Onofre Lopes University Hospital with nurses and nursing technicians who work at the COVID-19 unit. Therefore, the Missed Nursing Care Survey-BRASIL instrument was used for data collection. The analysis of these was descriptive, of simple frequency, central tendency and dispersion. The study had its approval authenticated by the consolidated opinion of the Research Ethics Committee, nº 4.812.664, CAAE:47765821.0.0000.5537. The most omitted care described by 71 nursing professionals were evaluated - 28 (40%) nurses and 43 (60%) nursing technicians, of which 44 (62%) worked in the Intensive Care Unit and 27 (38%) in the ward, 51 (72%) were female, with a mean age of 44 years, 37 (52%) were permanent professionals from the hospital and 34 (48%) from the emergency selection process for the COVID-19 unit. Most had been in the COVID-19 sector for three months and their professional experience ranged from three to 33 years. Regarding the most omitted care, the following stand out: the administration of medication 30 minutes before or after the prescribed time (43%) and the non-performance of the patient's mobilization to sit out of bed (28%). Regarding the reasons attributed to the omissions of care, the unavailability of medications when necessary (62%) and the unexpected increase in the volume/severity of patients (53%) are evidenced. It is concluded that the nursing care omitted during patient care with COVID-19 was related to daily nursing care such as medication and patient mobilization, and that the reasons for this are associated with the management of materials and time, which can be minimized with educational and organizational actions.
