SUMMARY:

The birth of a premature baby is considered a phenomenon of vulnerability and concerns for parents and family members. Paternal involvement in child care is relevant, as their support is necessary for the puerperal woman and for the child who requires specific care, in skin-to-skin contact and in the continuous follow-up proposed by the Kangaroo Method, from the hospital environment to the premature discharge. Thus, this study aims to understand how the father experiences the transitional nature of paternal care to the premature child in the Kangaroo Mother Care Method and build an interpretive model based on the meanings attributed by the father. This is an analytical and interpretive research that will follow as a methodological reference the Grounded Theory (or Theory Grounded in Data), according to the perspective of Kathy Charmaz. The research setting will be in a maternity hospital, a reference in neonatal care, in the state of Rio Grande do Norte. The theoretical sampling will consist of parents who are experiencing child care in the three phases of the Kangaroo Mother Care Method. There is no preliminary definition of the number of participants, since this is delimited according to the principle of theoretical data saturation. The following inclusion criteria will be considered: being eighteen years old or older and experiencing the care of a premature child in the Neonatal Intensive Care Units and Kangaroo Intermediate Care, as well as in the Kangaroo Mother Care Follow-up Clinic. As exclusion criteria, parents who are not residing in Natal and the metropolitan region; men who do not live with their partner and premature child, parents of newborns with congenital malformations and twin newborns. For data collection, an in-depth interview will be used, aided by an instrument consisting of two parts: the first referring to sociodemographic data and the second with the guiding question referring to the research object. Initially, a floating reading of the interviews will be carried out to highlight the main ideas of the participants. Word by word and line by line will be analyzed in order to build the categories and code the relationship between them through axial and focused or selective coding. The interpretive model will be analyzed and validated by groups of researchers selected for their expertise in investigations, discussions and health practices related to men's participation in neonatal care. The data will be analyzed based on the theoretical framework of the Theory of Transitions, proposed by Afaf Ibraim Meleis and discussed under the support of the relevant literature. The project will comply with the ethical precepts of Resolution 466/2012 of the National Health Council with submission on Plataforma Brasil. With the construction of the interpretive model, the aim is to contribute to the advancement of knowledge about this phenomenon so that it is possible to design intervention strategies that meet the specific reality of neonatal care, in the continued insertion of the father in the care of the premature child in the stages of the Kangaroo Mother Care Method. It is believed that the early bonding between father and child allows the early recognition of their abilities and insecurities in specific child care and their adequate biopsychosocial development. Such attitudes may support the improvement of child development indicators. As a scientific contribution, the interpretive model can support actions for health professionals, especially nursing, based on concepts built from the elucidation of the object of study.
