SUMMARY:

Peripheral venous access is a common procedure in health care services, making it a challenge for health professionals to perform in patients who need prolonged or repeated access. For presenting a higher risk of complications associated with the venous catheter, such as progressive patent vascularization. As an alternative, there is peripheral catheterization in the external jugular vein, performed by nurses that requires precise clinical evaluation, skills, mastery of physiology and anatomy, specific skills achieved in professional technical-scientific training, which requires the integration of multiple and complex knowledge. In this sense, the objective is to compare students' level of learning to perform peripheral venipuncture in the external jugular vein. This is a cross-sectional study, with a quantitative approach, to be developed with students from the sixth to the ninth period, enrolled in the 2020.2 semester, of the undergraduate nursing course at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte. Data collection will be via the Web on a virtual platform using four instruments, which will follow ethical recommendations for research involving human beings according to Resolution No. 466/2012 of the National Health Council. Study based on the theory of self-regulation of the process Bandura's learning process, in which the learning process is an essential element within the cognitive theory, with self-efficacy being a relevant element in the judgment of the very capacities to perform actions required to achieve a given performance. It is expected to identify whether nursing education enables students to work in highly complex procedures by demonstrating an increased sense of self-efficacy and low levels of anxiety related to this procedure.
