SUMMARY:

The increase number of people with chronic noncommunicable diseases is a phenomenon that concerns many countries in the world, whose health systems try to develop innovative strategies, focusing on patient empowerment, to improve their responses to the needs that arise from situations of chronicity; one of these strategies is the Expert Patient Program. The motivation to develop this study comes from a previous contact with the Expert Patient Program developed in Spain and which is being implemented in Brazil. The objective is to analyze the concept of Expert Patient in the context of people with chronic non-communicable diseases. This is a methodological study, conducted by the Hybrid Concept Development Model proposed by Schwartz-Barcott and Kim (2000). This model comprises three phases, of which they will overlap in their development: theoretical phase, field phase and final analytical phase. The first phase will be operationalized by a scoping review, using the methodological frame work of the Joanna Briggs Institute (2015), which will provide theoretical foundation for the following phases by searching for evidence in the literature regarding the concept of  interest. In the second phase, data collection will take place through the focus group strategy, with a sample number of 15 professional nurses experienced in health education for the self-care of people with chronic non-communicable diseases, in order to continue the refinement of the concept started in the theoretical phase, comparing the data found with the professionals' empirical observation. The third phase will aim to compare, analyze and integrate the results obtained in the previous phases through a lexicographic analysis of the textual material produced, which will be exported to the software Interface de R pour Multidimensionnelles de Textes et de Questionneires (IRAMUTEQ) , which will make it possible to write the final report. This study is approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte, under Presentation Certificate for Ethical Appreciation nº 30794220.1.0000.5537.
