RESUMO:
Introduction: Diabetes mellitus is among the chronic diseases that cause an impact on world health. In Brazil, this is one of the main mortality causes, it may be a reflex of the current population pattern resulting from demographic changes, with high prevalence and low control rates, regarding the adult population. Bearing this in mind, one needs to have a larger emphasis on actions of control, prevention and early detection with respect to the cases, with the goal of reducing complications. On the other hand, the afflicted users must be the modifying agents of their own health, and seek in the actions of selfcare one of the ways for the pursuit of more health, damage reduction and an improvement on their quality of life. Objectives: To identify the self-care actions accomplished by the users with diabetes mellitus on the primary health attention field. Method: Descriptive, exploratory study with a quantitative approach, to be made on the Basic Health Units, with the family health strategy care model, on North and South’s health district in the city of Natal. The approximate population of diabetic people in Natal is around 25,089, per the data from the system of Basic Attention information and surveillance of risk factors and protection of chronic diseases, gathered by household surveys conducted in 2016. The stratified random sample, with reliability interval of 95% and error margin of 5%, calculated is from 379 diabetic patients. Patients with diabetes from 18 years old will take part on the study, registered by the researched units through the signature of a Term of free and clarified consent in accordance with Resolution 466/12 from the National Health Council. Two surveys will be applied: one with socioeconomic variables and another, guided toward the patients’ self-care activities. The results will be analyzed with the statistical software free R, version 3.0.0. It is expected that the results may contribute to identify the hindering factors of the selfcare actions on both, patients and primary health attention professionals, to have a better daily assistance.
