CONDUCT OF NURSES REGARDING THE PREVENTION OF AN ADVERSE EVENT: FALL OF ELDERLY PEOPLE IN HOSPITAL INSTITUTIONS

The decline in the elderly generates public health problems, as with age the risk of falling increases. The drop is defined as an unintended event that results in unexpected change of position of the individual to a level below the initial position. Hence if necessary appropriate assistance to the hospitalized elderly, including continuous monitoring with a view to preventing the occurrence of fall, and should be a priority at the time of admission. This study aims to analyze the behaviors of prevention before falling in elderly patients admitted to hospitals, the professional nurse. This is a descriptive and exploratory and quantitative approach, to be held in Public Institutions Hospital of Eastern District in Natal. The sample, intentional, includes all nurses with at least one year of work in the institution and working in medical and surgical wards. a questionnaire with sociodemographic variables of nurses, will be used in addition to the aspects of the prevention behaviors for elderly falls, based on the National Policy for Patient Safety and the nursing interventions NANDA. The data will be recorded, transcribed, coded and tabulated in Microsoft Excel 2010 program and subsequently analyzed according to descriptive statistics, presented in graphs and tables. Preliminary results on the subject indicated that elderly inpatients in general, present imbalance, driven by anxiety, use of psychotropic drugs and diseases like dementia, cerebellar syndromes, the musculoskeletal disorders and neurodegenerative diseases. It is expected that the nurse in the context of this assistance, to establish preventive interventions and contribute to reducing the risks.
