Suicidal ideation among transvestites and transsexuals: a analytical study and social representations.

The aim of this study is to analyze the association between suicidal ideation and risk factors for suicide and its social representations in the life of transvestites and transsexuals. This is a quantitative study, the analytical type; and qualitative, exploratory type. developed with Non-Governmental Organizations Rights of People Transvestites and Transsexuals, in Rio Grande do Norte State. Data collection took place between November 2015 and June 2016, using four specific instruments: (1) Beck Scale of Suicidal Ideation; (2) Beck Depression Inventory; (3) Questionnaire of sociodemographic information, with questions relating to risk factors for suicide; e (4) Semi structured interviews with MP4 device. We interviewed 58 people transvestites and transsexuals. Quantitative data were tabulated in Microsoft Office Excel® 2013 software and received descriptive statistical treatment. In sociodemographic characteristics, 60.3% were transgender people, and 39.7% were transvestites; black or mulatto (70.7%), mostly aged 18-29 years (69%); single marital status (81%) with a high school education or less (75.9%); they were driven home (44.8%). None had done sex reassignment surgery, however, 39.7% had hormone therapy without medical supervision. Regarding the variables of suicidal ideation, 60.3% had suicidal thoughts, in which 34.5% had attempted suicide active, and 37.9% had attempted suicide previously. Regarding risk factors, significantly, had depressive states from mild to severe (58.6%); income for prostitution activity (37.9%); 87.9% made use of licit and illicit psychoactive substances, mainly associative use (67.2%); 24.1% were seropositive for HIV; and experience in victimization processes: verbal (96.4%), sexual abuse (66.1%), psychological (55.4%) and physical (41.1%). Subsequently, the data received inferential analysis, with SPSS software 20.0, adopting a significance level of p <0.05. For nominal and ordinal variables, non-parametric Chi-square test will be applied. To test the scalar variables, the Mann-Whitney U-test is used. To verify the existence of correlation, the Pearson coefficient is used. Qualitative data will be prepared from the establishment of a textual corpus that will receive three types of treatment: Lexical analysis using the software Analyse lexicale par Contexte d'un Ensemble of Segments of Texte (Alceste); Categorization by Thematic Content Analysis; and interpretation for the Theory of Social Representations. With regard to ethical issues, the project was approved by the Ethics Committee for Research with Human Beings of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte, in Opinion No. 1314559 of 11/09/2015 and CAAE 50203115.4.0000.5537. Seeks to identify the complexity of factors involved in suicidal ideation, and social representations of suicide among transvestites and transsexuals, especially regarding the promotion of mental health. We start from the following assumption: there are risk factors and meanings of suicide among transvestites and transsexuals, as influencing the decision to commit suicide.
