RESUMO:

It conceives the process of evaluation of learning by competence as the means by which to verify the student's ability in facing concrete situations, with the focus on not only the task, but also the mobilization and management of resources that the student has constructed formally or informally. For nurses, it is ensured that they meet the population's health needs, or enough education that qualifies them on the pace of contextual changes of today's society. The process of learning requires a definition of the evaluative process of teaching and learning, and includes not only the activities developed by the students, but also the formulation of instruments to guide the evaluation practice. Thus understood, the assessment of competence need be is an instrument that fosters continuous learning, and in the case of evaluation of nursing students, the course objectives and the professional profile described in Education Programme, are essential in this process. Although considered by most teachers as a complex task, compared to the difficulties for its operation, some instruments to assess general competences of nurses are already developed, originated mostly from international studies, such as, for example, the Nurse Competence Scale (MERETOJA, ISOAHO, LEINO-KILPI, 2004). This is a self-rating scale, which proves to be sensitive to differentiation of nurses' competence levels in various clinical settings and hospital work experience, including the transition from a nursing student to the stage of a newborn nurse graduate. In this view, the objective is to carry out the translation and cross-cultural adaptation of the Nurse Competence Scale (NCS) to Portuguese in the Brazilian context. This is a methodological study of cross-cultural adaptation that will use the steps recommended by Beaton et al. (2007): translation, synthesis, back-translation, review by a committee of judges, pretest and submission and evaluation of the reports by the authors of the original instrument. All produced versions will be evaluated by a panel of judges, which will consolidate the final version to pretest. At this stage, there is the content validity of the items, considering a concordance rate of 80% among experts. The pretest will be conducted with a sample composed of graduates of undergraduate courses in Nursing, Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte. To measure the reliability of this scale, it will be used the Cronbach alpha coefficient whose cutoff is 0.7, the most often used. As for the results, preliminary studies raised by a review, show that the assessment of learning and skills remains a challenge, and it is recognized that there are difficulties in this process, and the need for preparation of reliable assessment tools that can verify the student’s performance in action, in real learning scenarios. The adaptation process is expected to be achieved, and that the Nurse Competence Scale shows good psychometric properties and reliable, with adequate internal consistency for the assessment of the level of nursing students competence in the Brazilian context.
