RESUMO:

During all of human history, epidemics let a mark in the life of people and collectives. Leprosy (HD), a communicable disease, is one of the main examples, which let its mark as stigma, culminating in prejudice and social exclusion. In the past, the compulsory isolation of infected people caused serious social and psychological problems, resulting in total or partial removal and rupture of the family bond. Children were deprived of parental presence, and many times inhumanely removed, were confined and raised in reformatories/educational establishments. This project aims to evaluate self-esteem and life quality of children who were separated from their parents suffering form Leprosy in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Norte. Moreover, this study will provide a correlational analysis, with a transversal delineation and quantitative approach so that the stemming data can be scrutinized. The data mining is planned for the first semester of 2015 and will be restricted to the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Norte, after approval of the Committee of Ethics Research of the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande of Norte (UFRN). The study will be done on the base of a pool of 100 subjects who were selected thanks to the MORHAN Organization inventory (Rio Grande do Norte Office). In the process of data gathering, specific instruments will be used, such as: inquiries with social and demographics variable; Quality of Life Scale (The Medical Outcomes Study 36 – item Short Form), and in most cases, the SF-36 and the Rosenberg’s Self-esteem Scale. The data results will be tabulated in statistical program for a statistical analysis, besides the evaluation of the internal consistency of scales through the Croanbach’s coefficient. Finally, this study will lead to the hypothesis that the self-declared condition of children who were separated from their parents suffering from leprosy in the Brazilian state of the Rio Grande of the North affected their self-esteem and decreased their quality of life.
