SUMMARY:

The Caatinga, a predominant ecosystem in the Northeast Region of Brazil, stands out for its
unique flora and fauna, with individuals adapted to aridity. This area holds significant ecological
and cultural importance in Brazil, attracting interest across va rious fields such as research, arts,
literature, and audiovisual productions. Indeed, comprehending the effects of climate change
on the Caatinga is essential for shaping public policies and implementing practices aimed at
conserving and sustainably managing this biome. This understanding offers valuable insights
to address climate challenges in the region The Caatinga, although often recognized as a poor
and lifeless environment, is one of the richest and most biodiverse Seasonally Dry Tropical
Forests. In other words, it is considered the most biodiverse semi arid region in the world. The
importance of pre serving and conserving this biome is justified because it is one of the least
studied and most degraded by anthropogenic actions. Recognizing the biome is a way to
preserve organisms that have inhabited it for a long time Among the endemic organisms, the
plant Erythroxylum pungens O.E. Shulz is one such species. Found in a large part of the
Northeastern states, in Rio Grande do Norte, it is specifically located in the Seridó region. In
this thesis project, the Caatinga is approached as an art object, showcased in the virtual
exhibit ion "Caatinga in Focus: Biodiversity, Science, and Preservation," which was hosted on
a specific platform for interactive and virtual tours Additionally, a review article on the
Caatinga was developed, focusing on the use of flora as biotechnological potential. The article
highlighted data on the main plant species and their most studied secondary metabolites, as well
as technological and biot echnological aspects of the flora used in the development of new
bioactive products. In the other chapters, we will address the biosynthesis of tropane alkaloids
present in the development of the E. pungens species over 12 months, identifying alkaloids
already documented in the literature or the presence of new chemical entities. We also
emphasize the establishment of in vitro cultivation of Erythroxylum pungens callus,
demonstrating the best methods for cultivating the species and the genus
