SUMMARY:

The term fibro-osseous lesion is a specific designation for a group of disorders characterized, morphologically, by replacement of bone tissue by a matrix of fibrous connective tissue, a neoformation of bone tissue with varying degrees of mineralization. This group includes hamartomatous lesions, reaction or dysplastic lesions, and neoplasms. Fibro-osseous lesions have been reclassified many times, and recently the World Health Organization has included them in the group of fibro-bone and osteochondromatous lesions. This includes central ossifying fibroma (COF) and fibrous dysplasia (FD). Accurate diagnosis of these lesions is not easy and can only be done after a thorough analysis of clinical, radiological and histological aspects. However, it must be admitted that some cases still defy exact classification. Considering the diversity of biological behavior, which influences different forms of treatment and little scientific research that evaluates protein expression, identification of potential molecular markers that may be involved in pathogenesis of fibro-osseous lesions may help to understand these lesions. In this sense, crypto-1, also known as teratocarcinoma-derived growth factor 1, is a member of epidermal growth factor and in addition to having a critical role for early embryonic development, it is also associated with development and behavior of various types of epidermal growth. benign and malignant neoplasms. Some studies have related its expression to regulation of cell proliferation, survival, migration and invasion, acting as a co-receptor for the WNT pathway or as an inhibiting factor of β-catenin degradation complex. Thus, this study aims to perform a clinical, histological and immunohistochemical analysis of crypto-1 and β-catenin in a series of cases diagnosed microscopically as FOC and DF stored in archives of Oral Pathological Anatomy Service of a Brazilian population. Given the above, after analysis, all data obtained will be inserted into a file of Microsoft Excel® software (Microsoft Corporation, USA) and later transferred to a database of SPSS® for Windows software (Statistical Package for Social Sciences; IBM, USA), version 20.0. For all statistical tests used, the significance level established was p ≤ 0.05.
