RESUMO:

Introduction: The DNA repair system involves genes and proteins essential for the maintenance of genome integrity and subsequent control of many cellular processes. Alterations in these genes and proteins are involved in the development of tumors, in their evolution and in resistance to radiotherapy and chemotherapy. The objective of this work was to analyze the immunoexpression of DNA repair proteins, XPF and XRCC1 in squamous cell carcinoma of lower lip (LLSCC) and oral tongue (OTSCC) and to investigate possible associations with clinical and histopathological parameters. Material and Methods: Were selected cases LLSCC and OTSCC and analyzed by the immunohistochemical technique. for the statistical analysis, the chi-square test or, where appropriate, Fisher's exact test were used to determine an association between the expression of proteins with clinico-pathological features. Results: High XPF nuclear expression was observed in 72.5% of OTSCC cases and in 70% of LLSCC cases. Regarding the XRCC1 immunoexpression in the cases of OTSCC, high expression was observed in 60% of the cases, in the cases of LLSCC, about 60% presented high nuclear expression and no cytoplasmic expression was observed. There were no statistically significant associations related to clinical and histopathological parameters for both OTSCC and LLSCC. Conclusions: The high expression of XPF and XRCC1 proteins in cases of OTSCC and LLSCC suggests the importance in the development and progression of these tumors. The results of this research indicates that the immunohistochemical oexpression of these proteins is not associated with clinical and histopathological parameters that determinates tumor biological behavior.
