RESUMO:

Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is known for its aggressive clinical behavior with a relatively poor prognosis. Even at early stages of OSCC, which are expected to have favorable prognosis, the cancer-related mortality affects a considerable number of patients. Therefore, the identification of robust prognostic biomarkers that can accurately predict the behavior of OSCC and provide better treatment strategies is of great importance. Stanniocalcin 2 (STC2), a member of the stanniocalcin family, is a glycoprotein hormone initially known to be involved in calcium and phosphate homeostasis in fishes. In the mammalian systems, STC2 is expressed by a variety of tissues, playing important roles in bone development and in regulation of apoptosis and cell proliferation. Previous studies have shown that STC2 is also involved in carcinogenesis and progression of several cancer types. Little is known about STC2 in OSCC, but it has already been shown that STC2 overexpression increased the growth of OSCC and was correlated with metastasis and overall survival. Moreover, a recent study suggests that STC2 is released by cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs), allowing OSCC cells to become invasive and prometastatic. Therefore, the present study intend to evaluate the immunoexpression of STC2 and its association with clinicopathological and survival parameters of OSCCs, as well as determining the biological effects caused by STC2 downregulation in OSCC and CAF cell lines, in order to better understand the participation of STC2 in oral cancer.
