RESUMO:

Malignant neoplasias that affect the oral cavity are common in the world population. Among them the oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is the most frequent and presents high rates of morbidity and mortality. The oral verrucous carcinoma (OVC) because exhibits a distinct behavior being a low-grade variant of squamous cell carcinoma oral. The development and progression of these malignancies are related to imbalance in the regulation of division and cell death, associated to the tumor microenvironment that plays a fundamental role in the creation of a permissive way to the invasion and metastasis process of neoplastic cells. The CLIC4 protein is related to the regulation of the cell cycle, being upregulated in response to apoptosis mediated by p53 and EMyc proteins that participating in the process of transdifferentiation of fibroblasts in cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAF), which now express α-SMA which are important for the identification of these cells in the stroma. CAFs are the major cellular components of the tumor microenvironment. Some studies have shown that the presence of these cells is related to the aggressiveness and prognosis of several tumors. Thus, the present study aims to evaluate and compare the immunohistochemical expression of the CLIC4 protein in the parenchyma and in the tumor stroma and the presence of CAFs through the expression of α-SMA in OSCC and OVC since these malignancies have different biological behavior.
