RESUMO:

Odontogenic cysts and tumors represent a heterogeneous group of lesions originated from epithelial or ectomesenchymal tissues from the embryonic development of the dental organ, affecting only the gnathic bones. Ameloblastoma and odontogenic keratocystic stand out among them because they show intriguing biologic behavior and tendency to develop recurrences. In contrast, adenomatoid odontogenic tumour and calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumour, exhibit slow growth and a rather indolent biological behavior. There are many controversies regarding the appearance of these lesions, because the mechanisms involved in their pathogenesis are not yet fully understood. Some research has highlighted a new family of tumor suppressor genes called INhibitor of Growth (ING), composed of ING1, ING2, ING3, ING4 and ING5. The ING genes play an important role in cell cycle control, senescence, DNA replication and repair, cell proliferation and apoptosis in various neoplasms. Most of the studies characterized the levels of ING expression in the context of malignant neoplasms. However, little is known about the role of INGs in benign epithelial odontogenic lesions, some researchers suggest that they may be involved in the development of odontogenic lesions through changes in the control of cell proliferation and differentiation, and may be a key point in tumorigenesis. Thus, the present study intends to evaluate the immunohistochemical expression of the ING1, ING2, ING3, ING4 and ING5 in a series of cases of odontogenic epithelial lesions with different biological behaviors, in the attempt to contribute to a better understanding of the role of these markers in the development and biological behavior of these injuries.
