RESUMO:

Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSSC) is a malignant neoplasm from the lining epitelium, corresponding more than 90% of all cancers in the oral cavity. The high rates of mortality are related to late diagnosis, aggressive course of this disease, resistance to treatment and recurrence. Despite of huge progress on the past decades, the prognosis is still unfavorable, so new methods of early detection and risk assessment are necessary to guide the treatment and to improve overall survival. In this context, heat shock protein 27 (HSP27) have been researched as possible predictor of prognosis in some malignant neoplasm. The HSPs help in the synthesis and folding of many proteins in normal conditions and they are one of the defense mechanism in response to many types of stress. In normal conditions, they are expressed in low concentrations. However, in presence of stress or cell injury, the HSPs increase their expression to enable the cells survival in lethal conditions. The HSP27 shows high expression in many different neoplasms and it is thought to be involved in the proliferation and cell differentiation, apoptosis, invasion and metastasis. Therefore the aim of this research is to compare the protein HSP27 immunostaining between oral squamous cell carcinoma from oral tongue and normal oral mucosa, in addition to correlate the immunostaining with clinical parameters (metastasis and survival time) and histopathological (histological gradation of malignancy by Brandwein-Gensler et al. (2005) e Almangush et al. (2014)).
