SUMMARY:

This work's investigative proposal is to explore the arid hinterlands of the caatinga. Being the result of the reflections of the research project “The arid backlands: (re)readings of landscape, nature and written culture (1930 – 1970), I seek to expand its horizons through the literary source O Romance da Pedra do Reino e o Príncipe do Sangue do Vai-e-Volta (1971), by Ariano Suassuna. To do this, I use the debate between history and literature, from Antonio Celso Ferreira (2009), Cláudia de Oliveira Freitas (2003), José D’Assunção Barros (2021) to support the use of literary sources in historical research. Next, I propose a path through landscape concepts proposed, respectively, by Anne Cauquelin (1989), Michel Collot (2013) and Yi-Fu Tuan (2005), to unveil a poetics of existence in the creation of these arid hinterlands. Then, implementing the concept of paratext, by Gérard Genette (2009), I go through the speeches in the hemerographic source, Diário de Pernambuco, because, in this way, I establish not only a historicity of the text, but also, I highlight the emergence of the work in the world and of literary criticism regarding the artist based on simultaneous voices at the time of his production. And, finally, I apply the concept of “Stimmung”, proposed by Hans Urilch Gumbrecht, to think new ways about feeling and experiencing sertões today based on literary works.
