“STRAIGHT LINE EMPIRE”: SOCIAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL INTERACTIONS IN THE PROVINCIAL SERTOES OF RIO GRANDE DO NORTE
carnauba; sertoes; landscape.
Our work encompasses the challenging effort to investigate socio-environmental interactions, involving the sertanejos and carnaúba, within the scope of the Province of Rio Grande do Norte between 1822 and 1889. Specifically, we aim to understand the constitution of a given sertaneja landscape, the impact of carnauba on provincial revenues, its incorporation into the sertaneja material culture and the manufacture, circulation and export of its products. With regard to dealing with sources, we tread methodological paths generously marked by diverse contributions, but with significant emphasis on quantitative and evidential methods. From the point of view of the approach, this research is more closely associated with the field of environmental history. In the provincial sertoes of the North, carnauba served as food for both man and animals, especially during periods of prolonged drought. The infinity of uses of this tree, the adaptability to the environment as well as its socioeconomic importance, will culminate in the nickname “tree of life”.
