SUMMARY:

This work analyzes the movie Boi de Prata (1981) from the perspective of the Jurema Sagrada as the guide to the outcome of the plot. The movie, directed by Carlos Augusto Ribeiro Júnior, was produced in the late 1970s, and was recorded in Caicó/RN, with the support and participation of the local population. In the plot, we witness the land dispute fought between the ambitious Elói Dantas, son of a powerful, and already deceased, colonel of the Seridó Potiguar, against the sertanejo people, represented by the cowboy Antônio, the poet Tião and the juremeira Maria dos Remédios. The work of Ribeiro Jr., demonstrates its power by bringing a movie with such sensitive themes, about lands, colonialism, African-Luso-American religions, at a time when Brazil was submerged in the military dictatorial regime. In the struggle against Eloi, Maria dos Remédios exercises her ritual knowledge of the practice of the Jurema Sagrada, to close the body of Tião for the poet to fight against the heir of Colonel Severo Dantas. The plot of Boi de Prata (1981) also has a temporal aspect that does not follow a straight-line time, but that makes curves, advances and retreats, highlighting the hallucinogenic aspects of the drink of the Jurema Sagrada. The poet Tião, who makes use of the tea from the shell of the Jurema, is guided in his moments of agurk by a silver ox, which appears in his spiritual visions, leading him to safer paths in life. To analyze this work, we will use, in addition to the film as a source, the singing points that appear in the film and interviews collected with members of the production of the film, such as Amaro Bezerra (make up artist) and Mirabô Dantas (musician), in view of the absence of director Ribeiro Jr., on our physical plane. We will work our sources in the light of the Analysis of Speech and Oral History, supporting our discussion within the theoretical-conceptual field of Sertão, representations and cultural hybridisms.
