SUMMARY:

This work aims to analyze the practices of Catimbó Jurema by Maria do Salgadinho between
the years 1950 to 2017, in the context of Afro-Amerindian religiosities in Seridó Potiguar. We
start from the premise that there are traces of ancient rituals in their practices, of the indigenous
people who inhabited the Seridó riverside. People generically called Tapuias – Tarairiu –, who
lived in the Sertão Norte of Rio Grande do Sul. Through gestures, rituals and the constant use
of smoke, leaves and jurema drink, we believe in this strong approximation with the cult of
indigenous ancestors. We question: To what extent does the Catimbó Jurema de Maria do
Salgadinho, in the municipality of Caicó-RN, incorporate these ancestral jurem practices,
intersect with umbanda, emerging new perceptions of Afro-indigenous religiosity present in the
Seridó Potiguar? To guide us in the discussions, we have Ronaldo Vainfas (1995), who helps
us to review the effects of the European presence in sixteenth-century America, Darcy Ribeiro
(1995), who addresses the formation of the “Brazilian” people. Cristina Pompa (2001), dealing
with indigenous diversity and the use of “religion as translation”. And more, Mircea Eliade
(2010), Sandro Guimarães Salles (2010), Luiz Assunção (2010) among other scholars who deal
with the problem in question. Thus, we understand that the approximation of the academy with
the micro stories is relevant, enabling narratives such as that of the religious Maria Moreira da
Silva (Maria do Salgadinho 1933-2017), as these move other centralities promoting, through
tensions, negotiations and accommodations, significant changes in the space and in the lives of
people who allow themselves to experience profound experiences in any field, including
spiritual ones. This was the case of this country woman, mestizo and rural, who participated in
the history of her place through her religious life, forged in the thickets of the Sertão.
