SUMMARY:

The theme that covers this work is the viola singing in the sertão of Seridó potiguar. In this, we seek to analyze the presence of viola singing in the sertões of Seridó Potiguar, focusing on the city of Caicó-RN, delimiting its changes and continuities over time. Through this, the objective is to investigate the changes in writing about singing while investigating the changes and continuities in singing in the northeast in general and specifically in the region of Seridó norterio-grandense. Another intent that permeates this dissertation is to interpret the readings that violist poets have about the sertão, as well as to analyze the set of sociocultural relationships, rules and instruments that are used within the viola singing, which determine its functioning. Theoretical debates are based on concepts of Oral History, Cultural History, Popular Culture, as well as dialogues and analyzes based on the concepts of genealogy, history writing and sertões. The sources used will be oral sources (testimonies of singers from the Seridó region), literary sources (poetry books and anthologies of poets), newspaper sources (Diário de Pernambuco, O Poty and Diário de Natal), folkloric books and texts academics, in addition to various documents (such as a photo of the singers of the first festival of guitar players in CaicóRN) present in the personal collections of the poets of the aforementioned city. At the end of the research it is noticed that: viola singing has been active in Seridó since the second quarter of the 19th century; the writing of the song changes, as well as the statements about the singers; changes and continuities from technological demands such as radio and the internet; and the readings that the singers do about the sertões.
