SUMMARY:

Located in the Pernambuco micro-region of Alto Sertão do Pajeú, the Municipality of São José do Egito is known as the Immortal Cradle of Poetry not only because it is where some of the most famous singers and bench poets of the Brazilian Northeast were born (such as João Ferreira de Lima , the brothers Lourival, Dimas and Otacílio Batista and Rogaciano Leite) but also because poetry is currently the most important cultural element of the new generations (an example of which is the insertion of Popular Poetry in the Elementary School curriculum and the annual of Popular Poetry of Saint Joseph of Egypt). Considering the scarcity of studies on the subject, based on theoretical dialogues in the field of Cultural History carried out with thinkers such as Roger Chartier and the idea of popular culture, Pierre Bourdieu and the idea of field, Néstor Canclini and the idea of hybridism, Marcos Galindo and the idea of aggregation and Cristina Pompa and the idea of translation, the present dissertation intends to contribute to the research on the historiogeographic and cultural origins of poetry in this locality, considering the presence of the Iberian poetics of the colonizers and the presence of the indigenous poetics of the peoples originating in this region, from the Academia de Teixeira to the Academia de São José do Egito considering notions such as borders, paths and crossings that lead to the Egyptian poet João Batista de Siqueira, known as Cancão, in whose poetics it is possible to understand as a translation of the Xukuru culture. Sources such as ecclesiastical and civil books, literary books, maps, newspapers and poetry were used.
