SUMMARY:

This dissertation aims to study the historiography produced by the Historical and Geographic Institute of Rio Grande do Norte, in the first half of the twentieth century, from 1903 to 1953, a period that corresponds to the first intellectual productions that aimed at the construction of a given historiography and identity for the state of Rio Grande do Norte. In this sense, the work presented presents the attempt to understand what speeches and representations are written by the authors who periodically published on the indigenous hinterlands subdivided in the Zones of the Assú River and the Rio Mossoró Zone. Methodologically, inspired by Michel de Certeau, the work was divided into three parts: the first concerns the analysis of the first volumes of the magazines published in 1903, in which, we seek to understand the ideologies that underpinned the creation of the institute, the importance of the magazines as the main means of spreading his ideas and the first authors who published in the journal. The second part to be analyzed concerns the Zona do Rio Assú, with the objective of understanding how the authors Nestor Lima and Tavares de Lyra and Vicente de Lemos described the hinterlands and the indigenous people of that area. The third part consists of analyzing the backlands of the Mossoró River Zone, from the authors: Nestor Lima, Antônio Soares, Nonato Motta and Flerisbelo Freire, we seek to problematize the place of speech and writing of the authors, as well as understand the place of indigenous backlands of the Mossoró River in the historiography of the north.
