Meningomyelocele; Reading; Learning
Introduction: Myelomeningocele is a type of open spina bifida, resulting from inadequate closure of the neural tube during the development period, which can cause several changes. In Brazil, the prevalence of this alteration is approximately 1.6 per 1000 live births. Due to the various complications of the condition, the repercussions of the malformation with risks of changes in reading and writing skills, as well as literacy practices in this population, are studied. Objective: To characterize written language skills in children and adolescents with Myelomeningocele and to investigate the effects of literacy practices in this population. Method: Study structured in two researches: (1) cross-sectional study to characterize written language skills (phonological processing, reading and writing) in 09 children and adolescents with myelomeningocele between 7 and 15 years old who attend a Specialized Rehabilitation Center and (2 ) longitudinal study to investigate literacy practices in the target population. Results: 6 participants (66.6%) of the sample had deficits in phonological processing, reading and writing skills. Regarding literacy practices, the results will be statistically analyzed and included in the study. Conclusion: According to study 1, it is concluded that the target audience showed changes in written language skills and according to the reading scale, it is inferred that they have enthusiasm and interest in literacy practices. The conclusion regarding study 2 will also be inserted later.
