SUMMARY:

Introduction: Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) is a tool for recording cerebral hemodynamics to speech stimuli in Cochlear Implant (CI) users. The characterization of fNIRS and the establishment of its association with auditory-linguistic development can contribute to the monitoring and prognosis of this public. Purposes: define the fNIRS acquisition parameters in CI users and characterize the cortical responses obtained by fNIRS, associating such responses with hearing and language performance in children using CI. Method: Mixed, with a systematic review followed by a prospective, cross-sectional and observational study, presented as studies 1 and 2. For the systematic review, PRISMA was adopted, with a search for indexed references in the databases: PubMed, EMBASE, LILACS, Web of Science, Science Direct, Scopus, PsycINFO, CENTRAL, IEEE Xplore and gray literature: Google Scholar; Proquest (theses and dissertations), using the acronym PECOS: Population - P (CI users in any age group); Exposure - E (cerebral hemodynamic responses observed during fNIRS with speech stimuli in a person with CI); Comparison - C (not applied); Result - O (acquisition parameters for fNIRS collection); Types of studies included - S (clinical, experimental, observational, randomized, pseudorandomized or non-randomized studies) and as inclusion criteria: studies involving fNIRS with speech stimulation in CI users, in any age group; with information about the parameters of data acquisition and analysis. Exclusion criteria: animal studies; reviews, letters, books, conference abstracts, case reports, case series, opinion articles, technical papers, and guidelines. The analysis of the studies is in Phase 2. For Study 2, in the collection preparation phase, the selected participants will be distributed in Control Groups (CG) and Exposed Groups (EG). The EG will be made up of children with hearing impairment, CI users and inserted in intervention with Aurioral method. The CG will be composed of normal-hearing children paired in terms of sex, schooling, chronological age and hearing age with the EG. In both groups, clinical protocols will be applied to characterize auditory-linguistic performance and the fNIRS with speech stimuli /ba/ and /da/, in a habituation and dishabituation paradigm will be performed to identify auditory detection and discrimination with CI. The descriptive and inferential statistical analysis will consider the brain responses captured by fNIRS and the results of clinical protocols. Expected results: With the 19 studies selected in the Systematic Review, it is hoped that it will be possible to list the most common parameters used in fNIRS with auditory stimuli in people with HF. While, in study 2, so far, 10 children with CI have been selected as potential participants and, therefore, the intention is to record the cortical responses of these children and associate them with their auditory-linguistic performances compared with their hearing peers. Final considerations: It is expected that this research favors the establishment of a standard for fNIRS data collection in children using CI and that the data associated with clinical protocols contribute to discussions on development prognosis and validation of therapeutic interventions.
