Association of audiological and psychoacoustic measures of tinnitus with anxiety symptoms

Introduction: Tinnitus is the perception of a sound generated in the auditory pathways in the absence of an external source, can cause different emotional reactions. Objective: (1) To verify the association between the level of annoyance of patients with tinnitus and symptoms of low or high anxiety. (2) To analyze the relationship between audiological profile, level of annoyance and psychoacoustic characteristics of tinnitus with symptoms associated with anxiety. Method: Study approved by the Research Ethics Committee, nº 4,471,809. This preliminary version of the dissertation was structured in two articles. (1) Observational, cross-sectional and analytical research, with a sample of 27 patients submitted to anamnesis, Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI) and State Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI). (2) Cross-sectional and analytical study, in which patients were divided into two groups, (G1) without hearing loss and (G2) with hearing loss, the responses obtained by the visual analogue scale (VAS), THI, acuphenometry and STAI were analyzed. Results: (1) There was no association between the level of tinnitus annoyance and symptoms of low or high anxiety. (2) Preliminary results: 38 patients have been treated, 10 in G1 and 28 in G2. For G1, there was a predominance of females, with an average of 44 years and, for G2, 50% male and 50% female, with an average of 57.8 years. Higher means of THI, EVA and STAI were observed in G2, however, the collection is in progress to increase the sample number and later will be perform the inferential analysis of the results obtained.
