PAGES: 40
BIG AREA: Ciências da Saúde
AREA: Fonoaudiologia
SUMMARY:

Introduction: Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) are considered a public health problem and are among the most common transmissible diseases. Syphilis is a bacterial infection transmitted through unprotected sexual intercourse, blood transfusion and vertically to the fetus during pregnancy. In recent years, the occurrence of acquired syphilis has increased a lot in Brazil and in the world and can occur alone or accompanied by other infections, such as the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), among the damages that these infections can cause, the auditory and vestibular impairments stand out, causing hearing loss, dizziness and/or tinnitus. Purpose: To study the auditory pathway of adults with HIV and/or acquired syphilis. Method: Research project approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the Onofre Lopes University Hospital under nº. 4. 627.820. The preliminary version of the dissertation was structured in two studies, namely: Study 1: a scope review about the relationship between acquired syphilis and/or HIV and the auditory pathway. It will follow the criteria of PRISMA-ScR, with a search in the following databases: Pubmed/Medline; LILACS; Web of science; Scopus; and Embase; in addition to Google Scholar, ProQuest, Open Gray and Reference List. Study 2: prospective observational sectional study aiming to characterize transient and distortion product evoked otoacoustic emissions in adults with acquired syphilis and/or HIV. Patients from Public Services in Natal were recruited and divided into four groups: G1: adults with acquired syphilis; G2: adults with HIV; G3: adults with HIV and syphilis (coinfection) and G4: adults with no diagnosis of acquired syphilis and/or HIV or other pathologies that indicate a risk for hearing loss. An anamnesis was applied to identify the patient's clinical history and consultation of the medical record, as well as tympanometry, TEOAE and DPOAE. So far, the data have been tabulated and a percentage analysis of the occurrence of passes and failures has been performed. Partial results: The scope review is in the protocol finalization stage and its registration. Regarding study two, 50 subjects were included, 37 male and 13 female, aged between 18 and 59 years (x=35.46 years). They are distributed with one subject in G1, 25 in G2, seven in G3 and 17 in G4. It was found that G2 and G4 had a higher percentage of passing TEOAE and DPOAE in both ears. The G3, with co-infection of syphilis and HIV, had 42.85% of TOAE failure in the RE and 14.28% in the LE. Partial conclusion: To date, subjects with isolated presence of acquired syphilis were not recruited. As for the audiological findings, a possibility of alterations in the TEOAE and DPOAE was observed, with evidence of cochlear alteration in subjects with co-infection between syphilis and HIV.
