RESUMO:

INTRODUCTION: Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), the main causes of heart failure (HF), are changes in the functioning of the cardiac system, which is responsible for transporting oxygen and nutrients needed by cells. HF has several etiologies, is characterized as a highly prevalent disease and usually manifests as dyspnea, edema, fatigue and dizziness. Vestibular symptoms, secondary to HF, are not commonly studied, however, it is known that, besides generating physical symptoms, they can cause inability to perform professional, social and domestic activities, negatively affecting the quality of life of these patients. OBJECTIVE: To verify the association between the findings of the clinical assessment of balance, vestibular-ocular reflex gain, self-perception of cardiac and vestibular symptoms with advancing age in HF patients. METHODOLOGY: Study approved by the Research Ethics Committee under number CAAE 91408518.8.0000.5292. This is a cross-sectional, analytical-descriptive and observational study in which, so far, 11 individuals diagnosed with HF were studied. They were submitted to anamnesis, clinical balance evaluation, the Dizziness handicap inventory (DHI) and Minnesota Living with Heart Failure Questionnaire (MLHFQ) and, finally, the Video Head Impulse Test (vHIT), and the oculomotor evaluation modules were applied. and then the head impulse test. Descriptive data analysis was performed. PARTIAL RESULTS: The mean age of the patients evaluated was 51.6 years, while the predominant gender of the sample was male (54.55%). Regarding the etiology and type of HF, there was a prevalence of ischemic heart disease (45.45%) and HF with Preserved Ejection Fraction (Diastolic) (63.63%). Regarding DHI, the average overall score of the individuals evaluated was 19 points. In the clinical assessment of balance, a predominance of alteration was observed in 54.54% of the sample, in the Fukuda Pass test. Regarding vHIT, there was a predominance of hypofunction of at least one semicircular canal in 64% of the individuals evaluated, mean values below the normal range were found for the left posterior semicircular canal. We found asymmetry of at least one set of semicircular canals in 73% of the sample, with prevalence of posterior asymmetry in 67% of the sample.
