Complaint of Dizziness and sociodemographic, clinical-functional and psycho-cognitive relations in the elderly with Diabetes Mellitus type 2

Purpose: To verify the association of the complaint of dizziness with sociodemographic, clinical-functional and psycho-cognitive data in the elderly with type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. Methods: This cross-sectional, descriptive study was carried out in a university hospital in Natal / RN. Elderly patients older than 60 years diagnosed with T2D have participated. The elderly were evaluated based on a multidimensional survey containing socio-demographic, clinical-functional and psycho-cognitive data from the Mini-Mental State Exam (MMSE), the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15) and the Timed Up and Go Test (TUGT). Descriptive statistics, Chi-square test and Mann Whitney test (p <0.05 and 95% CI) were used. Results: The sample consisted of 157 elderly individuals, in which 45.22% presented dizziness complaints. The complaint of dizziness had an association with the variables gender, marital status, schooling, years of schooling, general health self-report and vision, complaint of lower limb pain, fear of falls, tendency to falls and psycho-cognitive symptoms. Conclusion: The elderly complained of dizziness were predominantly female, with marital life and low level of schooling. In addition, they exhibited worse perception of general health and vision, increased self-perception of pain in lower limbs, fear of falls, tendency to falls, risk of cognitive deficit and more depressive symptoms in relation to individuals without this complaint.
