Development of Quadratic and Reconfigurable Quasi-Circinal Structures of Frequency Selective Surfaces for 5G Applications

Frequency-selective surfaces (FSS) are structures widely used in communication systems, with applications in the microwave to terahertz range. This work presents a study on reconfigurable FSS (RFSS) for 5G applications in the sub-6GHz range. The proposed geometries are based on the slotted square spiral geometry with convoluted arms. The analyzes were carried out considering the proposed FSS in its ideal case, which consists of a slot to simulate the diode in the off state (OFF) and a strip for the diode in the on state (ON), and also with the insertion of PIN diodes for the practical case. These structures were fabricated and experimentally characterized to validate the numerical results, with good agreement between them being observed. Numerical results were obtained through simulations using the ANSYS HFSS software.
